Our exposure and vulnerability to extreme events - including both natural and human-induced hazards - continue to increase. Worldwide the impact of disasters is rapidly growing. At ITC, experts work to integrate hazard assessment and disaster risk management into strategic planning and sustainable development.

    Find out moreFood security

Population growth is leading to increasing demands for food and hence claiming more land for food production. This process has thrown many developing countries into a poverty trap characterized by expansion of agriculture into marginal lands, land degradation and declining yields.

    Find out moreGeo health

The topic of geo-health concerns the convergence of concepts and knowledge, tools and techniques developed in the health and the geographics domain. ITC brings in the necessary bio-medical expertise and link this effectively to spatio-temporal techniques and the latest developments in big data and data science.

Land remains a highly complex issue, and often forms a cause for conflict at regional, national, local and personal level in view of its value as an economic resource in relation to social, political, cultural and often religious systems. The failure to adopt, at all levels, appropriate (urban and rural) land policies and land management practices remains a primary cause of inequity and poverty.

Contemporary urbanization is accompanied by a variety of challenges with regard to the quality of urban life. At ITC, we develop tools, devices and infrastructures for addressing pressing urban issues such as basic service provision, disaster risk reduction, urban mobility or urban poverty.

    Find out moreWater resources

Many of the world’s major environmental concerns have to do with water. Potable water is getting increasingly scarce, which makes it a valuable resource to be managed wisely. Extreme weather causes excessive flooding which can often be prevented with proper by interventions. Pollution of valuable water resources and the status of precious wetlands deserve close monitoring.

At the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation our aim is to build capacity and strengthen institutional development of both professional and academic organizations as well as and individual. We work specifically in countries that are economically and/or technologically less developed.

Our education is based on knowledge exchange between organizations in less developed countries on the one hand in the Western world on the other, whereby ITC acts as a two-directional gateway for knowledge exchange.

We take an application-oriented approach, directed at finding solutions for and strengthening civil society in addressing issues of local, national and global dimensions. The multifunctional use of scarce resources, including space, the effects of climate change and environmental security are examples of those issues.
